Cyber Attacks on The Rise
Cyber attacks on the rise and we should as ourselves if there is anything we have learned over this last year, it’s that ANYONE can be a hacker’s next target! As we’ve seen, bad actors have attacked fuel pipelines, hospitals, food suppliers, and the list goes on and on.
So in honor of National Security Awareness Month, we’re outlining just a few things you can do to help stay protected. We believe that business (and personal) protection is a year-round initiative, and shouldn’t only be focused on for one month.
Master the Basics
There’s a strategic reason the foundation is poured for support before the house gets built. A stable foundation influences everything it’s built on. The same holds true for managing your protection. In order to master the more advanced, you have to first master the basics. Just a few of the basics include:
- Keeping your software up-to-date. Patch when necessary.
- Use strong passwords and try not to use the same thing over and over.
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) so you get alerted when someone tries to login to an account.
Don’t Stop at Prevention
A huge mistake we see is when businesses focus only on preventive security measures. Things such as firewalls, antivirus, etc., are designed to defend the perimeter and block attackers from gaining access. While they are important, prevention shouldn’t be the only line of defense.
Don’t Trust Links From Strangers
This is actually a real-world lesson that can also keep you safe in the digital space. Phishing is a hacker’s favorite, as it’s easy to disguise malicious links, hide behind fake emails, or trick users into giving up personal or confidential information.
As we mentioned, focusing on protection is not just for the month of October. It should be at the forefront of your every decision. With just a few of these quick tips, you can help raise awareness and better prepare for, and respond to, today’s online threats — no matter the time of year.
